ST-3 Precast Concrete Construction

by Juha Hyvarinen last modified Mar 06, 2011 08:41 PM

Business needs:
Precast concrete construction is an important type of building systems, which is heavily used in Nordic countries, but also in other European countries. Precast concrete elements are used also as floor and facade elements together with steel frame systems in countries around the world.

The benefits from the precast concrete construction IFC extension are e.g.:

  • Enabler for streamlined product data exchange between building designers, element designer, element manufacturer, and contractors
  • More efficient process without much of the manual re-input of data into different IT systems, and better possibilities for exploiting the data in downstream applications
  • Better basis for further development of precast concrete production automation.
As an expression of the real business need for the work, some ten years ago in Finland a data exchange specification and system called BEC-system (Precast Concrete CAD) was developed. The system was perhaps ahead of its time, but it is still to some extent used by the industry.

Solution:
The work will link and expand the work done by ST-2 Reinforced concrete and foundation sturctures -project, which covers cast-in-situ reinforced concrete structures. The project should also link with the ST-1 Steel frame structures -project for the purpose of co-operative use of precast concrete and steel structures.

Relationship to other exhange specifications: The work will build on the existing Finnish precast concrete exchange specification BEC-system, which provides for well documented PCC design process definitions, and fairly comprehensive PCC product data definitions. The specification was defined by the industry, and has been tested in real industrial use. The basic idea of the proposed project is to use BEC-definitions as the basis, update and expand them where needed, assure the international applicability of the definitions, and document them as required by the IAI domain project procedures.

Scope of work:
In Scope:
The scope of work is to support exchange of precast concrete construction (PCC) product data from design to manufacturing, and site installation.
Within the scope would be:
  • Precast conctere building frame structures, and various types of elements, like beams, columns, slabs, facade the elements, etc.
  • Spatial configuration of frames and elements, i.e. 3D shape (including features), location, and connectivity of elements
  • Element reinforcement, material, and other quality properties.
  • Element fixtures
  • Definition of basic support conditions and loads on the elements as input for dimensioning purposes (?)

Out-of scope:
Result data from structural analysis, like forces, moments, stresses, etc.
